Your Best Teacher
Pete has our Uncle Jim Lobdell on the show today, and we’re all looking forward to two hours of talk and debate about our education system. One of the best ways to figure out what we want out of educators is to reflect on the teaching styles, personalities and other factors that have made a difference for us as individuals.
So think back and let us know: Who was your best teacher ever (in or out of formal schooling), and most importantly — why?
If you answer during the show, Pete will consider reading your response on the air.
Mrs. B. Weber,
7-8th History teacher. She had passion.. Tons of passion. I can still recall a ton of stuff she forced into my brain. She was like a nun (except that she was married). She had a telescoping pointer that she’d happily rap on her podium with.
She wanted all of us to be up to date on the news and spent every friday doing a News Quiz for the class (we were divided into teams). We got extra credit if our team won. I still remember when she went postal on us for not knowing that Polygraph is a lie detector.
3 of my teachers stand out to me for 2 reasons. Until Thursday one of the reasons never got my attention. First the teachers. My 8th grade teachers Mr. Arps. It was Mr. Arps who was always there to talk or go the extra mile to help me understand. Mr. Arps also practiced awarding. When we got his little quiz right he’d hand out "lemon drops" I forget the name of his quiz but it was more a riddle then anything else. The second was Mrs. Biffert. Mrs. Biffert was a high school teacher of mine. She was very motivational, caring and never allowed me to fail no matter how lazy I got! Then Mrs. Arps, yes Mr. Arps and Mrs. Arps were married, now divorced. Mrs. Arps was another motivater and pusher. She was pretty much the same as the others, but she had a way of knowing her students and finding their strenghts and working from that, truly an art.
So what are the two things that stand out about them all? Well, first. All of them had their own way of excelerating their students in a personal way. Secondly and not so important but it rang an odd bell. They’re all English teachers! More ironic then anything else but in my mind it was the English teachers that helped me the most.
