Tim Wise on Institutionalized Racism and White Privilege
The email is already pouring in about anti-racist activist Tim Wise’s appearance on the show. He hung with Pete for the whole 3rd hour, so if you missed it, you can catch it again on the replays from 10-11pm and again 2-3am ET. It was fast paced, informative and hilarious.
You probably didn’t agree with everything Tim said, or maybe you just want to explore some of the ideas raised a bit more. So here’s your chance…
I heard parts of the show today. Loved the part where he pointed out that Bill Cosby and Jermiah Wright had similar quotes.
Good show Pete.
He confirmed to me that many people see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear and have very short memories when it comes to what they think they’ve seen and heard.
Just added Tim to my facebook. He sends the coolest updates. He put up a video of McCain supporters with slogans like “never vote black”. Disgusting but eye-opening.
Did you hear Cosby’s comments about how he thought that he was talking to his people when he was getting on black people and how they should be picking up their part of the world, I would like to say to Cosby that all people should be his people and maybe then there would be less trouble. If you don’t see everyone in the world as your people in the first place, there is no way you will ever deal with people on an equal playing field.
Nice thought but the truth of the matter is black folk are on the lower economic scale when it comes to total population worldwide.
Why is this? Are they just stupid? Or could it be that they have been discriminated against for centuries?
No schooling, no acceptance, no voice.
Yea, I’m a guilty a white person.
We should feel guilty.

Why is it we like color TV but we don’t like color people? We’re stuck in black and white when it comes to human beings relating to each other.
Very, very sad!
I’m an old guy and my big wish is that we can get beyond skin color before I die.

Can it ever be surpassed? As long as the majority believes they are better than the minority and as long as the minority believes they are owed something by the majority, the racial divide in this country will never be closed.
I want to start a new rant! I’m pissed off (or angry for those of you who think pissed is a bad word) at the music Industry whining that they are losing money with people downloading music. this is the same people who got me to purchase the SAME music on a record, then a tape, then a CD, and now I have to Pay to DOWNLOAD the same song I already bought 3 times (4 times if you bought it on 8 track). As for new music if they make good quality new stuff maybe people will pay for it!
Happy Holloween, and such
I’m sorry but I’m not buying what he’s selling.
After spending the past 3 years at public school coaching basketball I can tell you one of the following 2 things is “GENERALLY” true:
1: White people are generally more invested in their children and making sure that their children have the best opportunities available.
2: Black people are generally less invested in their children and are not very hands on with their kids.
I can provide countless examples.
Example 1: Go to a parent teacher conference and notice how many white kids parents show up to talk to the teachers about why their kid has a B instead of an A.
Contrast this with how many black parents don’t show up to talk to teachers at all.
Example 2: It is simply not cool in the black community to be considered smart. It is ABSOLUTELY considered selling out and I have personally witnessed black kids be ridiculed by other black kids for making good grades or even raising their hands to speak and participate in class.
You can argue the why’s about this all you want and there are exceptions to this rule.
But I personally know several white kids that get grounded from extracurricular activities in school because their grades slipped from an A to a B or a B to a C.
I also can personally show you where a black politician from here in New Orleans actually FOUGHT AGAINST a measure in the legislature that would require students who participate in extracurricular activities to maintain JUST A FUCKING 2.0.
http://www.nola.com/news/index.ssf/2008/04/lawmakers_turn_back_higher_aca.html
We all know black children are very active athletically and in the band (here in New Orleans especially) and currently they aren’t even required to make grades that would graduate them to participate.
If you want to look at why black children and families fail then look no further than education and when black leaders are purposely standing in the way of bettering their educations then don’t come to me blaming whitey.
