Thursday in Philly

Okay, so it’s not quite Thursday yet, but I’m exhausted and need to get some sleep if I want to keep up with Pete on the air tomorrow. Another busy show is planned. We’re having a blast here in Philly. I got to see Pete’s warm-up at Colbert and then watch the taping. If you missed Wednesday’s episode of The Colbert Report, you definitely want to catch the last segment on a replay. Pete and I both promise you it will be worth it. Tears were streaming out of my eyes I was laughing so hard.

So today we covered cheesesteaks, gay rights, Latino issues, and other random stuff. Sean (the producer who’s on scene with us keeping shit running) has taken a bunch of pictures. I’ll try to get some up today before or during the show.

Update: Photos from Wednesday’s show!

Referring to pic #1… I don’t think that Pete has been surrounded by that many guys since the incident at the Russian Bath House.

I’m certainly relieved you also survived the Russian Bath House encounter to tell us the tail, John. :-D

On a side note, all political debate around the world is now moot since Iran is the strongest military power.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7352654.stm

According to President Soapbox, Iran, “was the most powerful nation in the world.” and “The country’s strength was such that no major power would dare to challenge its security.”

This should clear up all UN bickering.

This comment is for Steve from Boston.. Yesterday (Wednesday April 16) when Pete was talking about the gays/wannabes Steve went off a little bit about how the world was “bred” into him because he’s a straight white male. This type of thinking has allowed the whites to become the minority in this country. Maybe Steve hasn’t looked into who gets scholarships now for colleges. Congrats Steve your older so you’ve probably allready been through college, been working the same job for how ever many years, but what about the white males trying to get jobs now, trying to get into school now? It’s OK to give scholarships because a person is latino, black, or whatever other minority but as soon as someone sets up “WHITE ONLY” scholarships it’s racist? Affirmative action is HORRIBLE and needs to be REVOKED. It doesn’t make us equal it seperates us even more. It’s ok to set up black groups (NAACP), it’s ok to set up latino groups (LULAC), it’s ok to set up gay groups (GLAAD) but as soon as a white tries to set up a white only group once again it’s “RACIST”. You’re right Steve whites aren’t told by bosses “NO” because they’re white, they’re told “NO” because affirmative action says they have to hire at least 1 black and 1 latino, regardless of skill. When’s the last time anyone heard a white say “OH IT’S BECAUSE I’M WHITE”? Not often. How often do people hear “IT’S BECAUSE I’M BLACK or BECAUSE I’M THIS RACE OR THAT RACE”? DAMN NEAR EVERYDAY. I’m not saying all this to be racist but if we’re all suppose to be equal, truely equal, then… WHY THE FUCK CAN’T A WHITE MALE START A WHITE ONLY GROUP FOR THE SAME REASONS THE OTHERS EXIST? WHY CAN’T I GET A SCHOLARSHIP JUST BECAUSE I’M WHITE?

This is the same thinking that has gotten to the NFL. Any team looking for a new coach MUST interview a minority before hiring anyone. Even if Vince Lombardi came back to life, you’d have to give a shot to that Omar Epps look-a-like from Pittsburgh.

Teams have been fined for not following this rule.

When I die, I want to come back as a 1/2 black 1/2 latino lesbian woman who is paralyzed from the waist down. I’d get a free education and have a job anywhere I’d want.

I love when the blog becomes a place for privileged white males to pity themselves. Nothing could be more self-humiliating. It’s pure entertainment to watch white guys whine. I really feel for you, fellas.

Criticizing Steve for hurting the white race, however, is a bit beyond the pale.

Anyone catch that bullshit “debate” on ABc last night? That ridiculousness has set me off like nothing has in a loooooong time. I’ve written several letters to the execs at ABC and Disney, their advertisers, and I also left some messages on the comments line. We’re fucking FURIOUS. Pete, I didn’t catch all the show today, so I’m not sure if you discussed it, but you have to do a show tomorrow (or soon at least!) on the consolidation and outright bias in the corporate media. It’s so fucking obvious that even my Republican family members noticed how badly Barack got piled on last night. They’ve switched sides.

If anyone’s elitist, it’s the worthless media and half of our “representative” government. It’s shocking to me to know that there are still people (like Todd from FL) who can drink that stale, modly Kool-Aid still.

I’m riled up. Can’t take it anymore.

    April 17th, 2008 | 8:58 pm

Jason from Texas, welcome to the blog! You nailed it! Brian, your wrong in this case. I’m not rascist, but when I go into some factories to deliver or pick up, it seems to be a majoity from south of the border (I say south of the border due to the fact that few are actaully Mexican, most come from Central and South America as well). They just busted 300 people with Purdue Chicken to have stolen social security cards, 300 for goodness sake. How many white guys are stealing s.s. cards to gain employment? I worked with a white guy whos last name sounded Mexican (Sorry can’t remember it) and was asked if he was interested in a scholarship, when learned he was white, he was denied, what bull shit. I listen and hear what black people went through in this country. Fine, let them have their day, I don’t believe in slavery, I don’t believe in the stereotypes and its traced back that my family never “owned” (sorry if thats the wrong term) slaves. But what have the Mexicans and Central/Southern Americans gone through in America? Don’t give me low wages bullshit, they accept it. They accept living 20 people in a 2 bedroom apartment. They bring drugs and violence here, very few bring a better life. I used to live in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. When I took my realestate classes we learned how to search offenders in the neighborhood, no surprise, a majority of the child molesters, drug dealers/users and thiefs were from south of the border. I happen to know a few from south of the border, who came here for a better life, have full time jobs, send their kids to school to learn. I respect them and welcome them. But since illegal immigrants came here, crime has went up and the economy has gone down. But Brian I understand since your on a sattelite radio show you need to sound good.

    April 17th, 2008 | 9:03 pm

Oh yea Brian. “priviliaged white males” how so? By definition, my white ass has the same rights as everybody, reguardless if they came illegally. In fact, as Jason mentioned, I wonder how many jobs I have been passed up on so a company can employ a minotiry? Its all good if they over qualified me, I have no beef with that. But lets look deeper. Lets look into comedy. Richard Pryor, Chris Rock and Dave Chepelle. How is that white people also known as “cracker”, “whitebread” and so on are depicted to have a voice as if they all got kneed in the sack? Isn’t that rascist or in your defence, they’re not privilaged so it must be ok, right? I enjoy the comedy of two of those people. One, unfortunetly has a terrible disease the other got his inspiration from him.

This is for Jason from TX:
Did you ever think that maybe, just maybe, in the smallest of small chances you are not able to acquire said scholarship because you are not smart enough? It may have nothing to do with the color of your skin but the contents inside your brain and your ability to not use it. Or your inability to use it.
Use your head and learn the laws of the land, learn the boundaries of the area you need to conquer, just like your Anglo-Saxon ancestors did, and use the laws and rules to your advantage. You have heard of the Anglo-Saxons, haven’t you? Become smarter and beat them at their game; or you can bitch about it and do nothing but drink beer and bitch some more, hate the fucking blacks and Mexicans and the like, and stay an illiterate (illiterate does not necessarily mean not able to read, look it up) cock-sucking mother-fucker white trash piece of shit sucking on the teet of society by collecting unemployment and food stamps while the rest of us carry your weight.
Get up and stand on your feet and quit blaming others for your lack of accomplishments in life.
Also, look for scholarships that do not require race. You can also do what the rest of us did: get a loan for your education. Whatever you do, do something with your life, there are too many dead-beats in this country and my shoulders are tired of holding up so much weight.
    Good luck

    Scott the trucker:
All you complaints about the people from south of the border sound very similar to what the natives of this fine land once said about your ancestors.
Whites brought disease, drugs, and the crime rate went through the teepee roof.
Your statement about illegal immigrants bringing the economy down: well, you need to please provide some proof for that one. I couldn’t find one statement blaming farmer helper Jose single-handedly bringing your trucker wages down. I blame that on many factors, such as large companies like JB Hunt and Schneider and the like, who hire rookies fresh out of driving school and pay shit wages, and places like Roehl (promounced rail, but you know how to pronounce it, don’t you?) follow the lead because they can get away with it. Shippers are paying less because they know large companies will bid lower than the next one, and so on and so on.

  15. April 17th, 2008 | 10:02 pm

    About the show today…

I’m listening to the replay of the interview with Dr. Mark Sageman about Al Queida and the terrorists.

Pete, that was the best hour of radio i’ve heard in a long time.
You asked all the right questions, responsive, informative questions. I am so used to hearing talk show hosts ask pre-prepared, soft-ball questions but this was more like a conversation than an interview. It was a very good honest, informative interview.

I wonder how one would go about nominating this segment for some kind of national award.

Awesome interview, Great guest, fascinating topic. Keep up the good work.

  16. April 17th, 2008 | 10:07 pm

    Also:

Pete mentioned today that he was going to play my call to the bosses @ Sirius when he asks for a raise.

Best of luck with that, Pete. Those bastards wont even get off thier over-paid fat ASSES to go down to Sirius’ Basement to smack some technician to type in “INDIE TALK” in the place of “COURT TV” on the display. Good luck getting them to walk down to HR and putting you in for a raise.

Jason from Texas - right fucking on.

Martin from Virginia, quit bitching, what do you know about Jason’s intelligence level? I guess since he doesn’t subscribe to the liberal enlightened view of fucking whites over out of bitterness makes him “ignorant”? You liberals need to come up with some new material, it’s really getting old. Loser. I’ll tell you the same thing minorities always cry about…. how “you don’t know what it’s like to be [insert victim group here].”

“You obviously don’t know what it’s like to be white.”

And if you are white, you should be ashamed of your self hate. Either way, you are absolutely the problem with this country now. Anyone who doesn’t agree with you is ignorant, unemployed, illiterate, racist, fucking his sister….. man all of your arguments are poster-boy whiny liberal. Let me address your fucking assumptions that I’m sure you have about me. College educated, married to a non-family member, and successful in my career. I’ve never taken a fucking dime in my life, and I don’t owe victim hustlers like you shit.

  18. April 17th, 2008 | 11:23 pm

On a side note, in honor of tomorrow’s interview with documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me is brilliant), here are websites of two new documentaries you may not have heard about: IndoctrinateU, by Evan Coyne Maloney explores censorship, harassment and speech codes on American campuses. He’s a right-libertarian, but that shouldn’t stop a fair minded person from seeing his point of view. Maloney is small time and marketed his film virally.

Premise Media, on the other hand, are independent producers and have marketed their new documentary, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, starring Ben Stein, virally and through traditional media. Controversy surrounding this film propelled it to a top topic in the blogosphere, according to a March 25 Premise Media press release. It is about the suppression of dissent from neo Darwinian orthodoxy. The controversy was stirred up by the atheist stars of the film, PZ Myers and Richard Dawkins, who have spilled a considerable amount of pixels denouncing the film. The National Center for Science Education, a group which participated in the assault of Richard Sternberg, who had the temerity to publish a peer reviewed paper supporting Intelligent Design in the Smithsonian (I think), is so concerned over this film, they set up a website devoted to criticizing it.

This film isn’t just about those who promote intelligent design as a falsification of the widely accepted mechanism of undirected gradualism in evolutionary history, it is about those who’ve been shut up for questioning the central dogma of modern evolutionary theory.

Anyway, the sites have trailers and clips and enough information to decide if either film might provide another view from which one might learn.

I’m fairly certain neither film practices the kind of dishonest editing employed by Michael Moore. I’d be interested to see if anyone claims otherwise and what they offer in support of that claim…

  19. April 18th, 2008 | 12:12 am

Just got home. I’m wasted from the trip. It was really fun. Sageman was amazing — wish we had 3 hours with him. I didn’t agree with every conclusion he has, but the disagreements only made me want to hear more, and hanging out with him really gave me a sense of humility about how much we all have to learn about these issues.

Scott, I love you, and I’m just going to let us disagree on this one, since others are taking up my case just fine. (I love that!)

We’ve got some Ben Franklin pics to post. I’m going to go see about Todd’s link-laden comment (the system catches multiple links because spammers are trying to post lots of links to their sites — if I didn’t have that block, we would literally get hundreds of erroneous comments every day. More later folks…

  20. April 18th, 2008 | 12:19 am

Now that I’ve reviewed (and approved) Todd’s linkful comment, I realize I was wrong before. It wasn’t the spam filter that stopped it, but the Neanderthal filter.

Todd, why on earth don’t you get your own blog? Is it because no one would read it, whereas here you get a guaranteed audience for your blather? If you want to post tons of links and long quotes, getting YOUR OWN BLOG and then linking us to posts you make to it would be the appropriate and polite thing to do. You seem to be the only commenter who is treating the PBB comments like their own, personal weblog…

HOLY SHIT…THANK YOU BRIAN FOR POINTING THAT OUT. Todd and John are why I don’t post here more often. By the time I get done getting through all their narrow-minded blather, I’ve forgotten what the Hell I wanted to type.

Scott The Trucker; I agree with you 100%. When I can’t communicate, concisely, IN ENGLISH with the guy loading/unloading my trailer. There is a problem. I should NOT have to hunt down a supervisor in order to tell the guy how I want the load put in to the trailer so I can scale it out and make it legal to run.

I’m also curious to know which Perdue plants were hit. My company hauls a lot of Perry, GA to Strausburg, VA.

I’m a LISTENER to the SHOW. I’m PARTICIPATING in the CONVERSATION. I’m commenting on the topics DISCUSSED during the show! (when I’m not defending myself against your scurrilous form of ‘debate’)

What’s more, I haven’t put long quotes in of anything since you asked me not to do so! The alternative is a HYPERLINK. Quit yer bitchin’, ya big baby.

    Pete from IOWA,

Don’t read them if they are so narrow minded. If you’ve forgotten what you wanted to say in such a short time, quit smoking blunts before you post… :)

Texas boys hanging tough, good. I told the guy to get his ass going and get on with his life, to find other means to go to school, loans or other scholarships that do not ask for race, and they are out there. There are more scholarships that he can apply for than he knows about. I told him to do some research and find a way to go to school. I told him to stop bitching about his problems and to do something about them, we all do, at least most responsible indivinuals do anywany.
I don’t care what anyone’s race or color is, but if that person wants to attend school, that person will find a way. No matter what!
I know I am what the problem with this country, we have been doing it for centuries. One of my ancestors was a slave trader who brought them from Africa. He made a lot of money helping the economy of the country at the time, and now he is rolling over in his grave knowing I have blacks as friends, neighbors, and employees. My daughter dated a very nice young man who is working his way through school because he did not qualify for any scholarships, even though he is black. My son is dating a young lady working her way through law school. She’s white, so I guess that doesn’t count.
You see, if there’s a will he will find a way to go to school and help society, and that’s all I want him to do.
Now for the loser comment, that’s fine, you don’t know anything about me so it means nothing to me.
    Have a nice day.

    April 18th, 2008 | 8:45 am

To #21, why am I getting lumped into that? I have made an attempt to stay away from over posting here.

Because I have a differing view from yours, that makes it “narrow minded”? I see. You are exactly the type of person that this show tries to steer away from. One that adds labels to people for little or no reason.

  25. John from Cleveland
    April 18th, 2008 | 9:49 am

“You see, if there’s a will he will find a way to go to school and help society”

As long as you and your parents (in the case of undergrad) do your taxes, you stand a good chance at getting loans through Sallie Mae. I got every dime I needed to pay for grad school almost without question.

I didn’t get any scholarships at all. I can tell you that every application I wrote required me to indicate race. Do yourself a favor, go to any scholarship search site. You look up all the scholarships that are earmarked specifically for minorities.

Keep in mind, these are not government funded but private groups. Therefore, no one should take issue with that. However, emulating what was said above, you are immediately racist if you make a white-only scholarship.

  26. April 18th, 2008 | 10:23 am

I definitely do not think the problem is WHAT people say on this blog, but rather HOW they go about it. I disagree strongly with John on just about everything, but I think his participation is valuable here, and it is productive rather than divisive. He’s obviously quite smart, but more importantly I think he’s sincere and open-minded. I think John actually cares about the show and the blog, and that shows.

Maybe Todd does too, and he just thinks that upsetting everyone increases listenership and blog traffic. I don’t want to impugn his motives for doing what he does, though I certainly don’t think it’s productive in any way. There are so many blogs and talk shows that are exactly what Todd seems to wish this one was, I guess he feels the need to spread the joy. He’s kind of like the Al-Qaeda rejects Sageman was talking about on the show: Todd would do his own show or blog, but no one wants him, so oddly that has induced him to proselytize his views elsewhere to try to win converts.

Todd, I’m just kidding about the Al-Qaeda thing, of course. I’m sure they would have accepted you ;-)

  27. Shane from Texas
    April 18th, 2008 | 12:34 pm

    Martin from Virginia -
Hey man, the reason for my ‘loser’ comment was not based on your political opinions - which I completely disagree with, obviously. You and I are on opposite ends of this issue, and that is perfectly alright. Yes, I meant it when I said that I believe your attitude on this matter is a problem, and it does bug the hell out of me.

But what really is fucked up is your automatic personal attacks against two people just because they don’t share your opinions. I hate that more than anything. I try so hard not to insult people who think differently, except when they insult people who can’t tolerate opposing views, if that makes any sense. Scott the Trucker (as evidenced by his name) is probably a hard working honest guy. And obviously Jason from Texas is not “illiterate” and very likely not “collecting unemployment.” I guess it would be easy if everyone who disagreed with you was a failure, but it’s not the case. Don’t be so cynical man.

  28. April 18th, 2008 | 1:30 pm

Shane, your white-pride bullshit is so pathetic, and your name-calling is not excusible. You’re using epithets and labels to try to make other people look bad, and in this forum that’s bound to backfire. You’ve got to step up the level of respect, or else go somewhere else. We really aren’t hear to learn what “liberals” or “conservatives” think in the words of their adversaries. And calling people “loser” is just sooooo lame. Grow up and get over it. Bring your brain to the debate or beat it.

  29. April 18th, 2008 | 1:38 pm

Oh, and now I see what Shane was referring to in Martin’s post. Somehow I missed that little diatribe. Fellas, it makes it really hard for us to agree with you when you take up name-calling. Martin, I really like what you have to say, but you were totally nasty about it. There’s got to be room for saying stuff humorously without trying to lower the level of the discussion. Remember, we can’t see you grinning if you’re being facetious or sarcastic or satirical. And if you’re just trying to be mean, how are we possibly going to get anywhere with these debates?

Also, the term “white trash” is pretty racist, but not against whites. It assumes that most “trash” is nonwhite. So as much as I agree with what you’re saying, Martin, even you aren’t above racial bias. None of us is. It doesn’t it feel better that I point that out rather than jump down you’re throat and accuse you of being racist just because of something you said (and probably never thought about, understandably)? We all need to be a little more forgiving and take fewer digs. PLEASE…

It’s not about conservative or liberal.. It’s not about democrat or repbulican.. It’s about people like Martin making stupid comments about “Texas boys hanging tough” YOU GOD DAMN RIGHT!!! TEXAS HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE “HANG TOUGH” PLACE!!! THAT’S WHY WE’RE THE ONLY STATE THAT’S ALLOWED TO FLY OUR FLAG AT THE SAME HEIGHT AS THE AMERICAN FLAG… Why is it that as soon as someone brings this topic up it’s “white-pride bullshit”? Yet when a black or hispanic does it it’s “oh sry about the years of oppresion”… If we’re truely equal then why havent the Native Americans been given money? And as far as loans.. WHY THE FUCK SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY BACK THE SAME MONEY MINORITES GET FOR FREE? And as far as “doing taxes” my family makes too much money to get financial aid and things of that nature.. yet too low to get any breaks.. I cant work and still get “welfare”.. Its a fucked up system when someone (white/black/yellow/brown/purple) “sry you make too much money for this aid but you didnt pay enough during the year so you have to pay”

Brian, Jason, and Shane- you are 100% correct and I was way over the line. Please accept my apology on this matter so we can move on.
I never meant any harm with the “Texas boys hanging tough” remark, I meant it as a compliment. I have been to Texas many times visiting friends and associates, and have always been inpressed with the level of pride in Texans. Austin is one of my favorite places, with the statue ofStevie Ray Vaughan.
Anyway, I hope the young man from Texas can make it to school on time without having to pay any money, or the least possible amount anyway. This country needs passionate people to run it, and he has passion in his heart. That’s a compliment.
In school I hope he finds a purpose where he can place all of his energy, passion, and the guidance needed to fulfill his dreams. When he does make it to school, he needs to keep in mind it is a lot of hard work. He also needs to keep an open mind, not like mine is sometimes; it makes it easier to learn with a large inlet.
One last comment: not all minorities have a free ride to school. Having a tan does not mean you’re school bound.
    Godspeed.

    Unca,

That’s cute. Too bad it is so misleading. But I guess when one doesn’t have facts on one’s side, distortion is the only alternative to admitting error! It is a crafty way of avoiding the serious arguments of the ID crowd and justifying the suppression of academic freedom.

  34. April 18th, 2008 | 3:39 pm

Jason, your outrage is largely understandable. Your conclusions are, however, ridiculous.

I don’t really get the concept of pride in one’s race, but since I’m white, I can only address how fucking sad it is to hear someone saying I should be ashamed of being white if I side with people of color on some issue. Y’all can have as many back-asswards views as you want, but don’t think you’re not going to get laughed or smirked at when you try to scapegoat people of color for a system that is inherently fucked that they had nothing to do with setting up. People of color are trying to make the best of a fucked up situation, just like it sounds like you want to.

Instead of all of us looking at the elites that run this country and demanding fundamental changes that empower poor and working people — white, black, or as you say purple — we will get nowhere. Whose interests do you think you’re serving when you turn on working people of color, as if they’re the problem, instead of a SYSTEM that empowers a handful of people (some of them women, blacks and latinos, to be sure!) at the expense of the rest of us.

Give me a break, Texas boys. You’re fighting the wrong enemy. The real question is, why do we live in the industrialized country where higher education is least accessible to working people of all races? How on earth can you be so gullible as to fall for the trick that the problem is black people (or their advocates) and not the motherfuckers that set up THE SYSTEM that says a decent education has to costs tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars? Do you think that was black people’s idea? Really?

Rich people want you to think the problem is ANYTHING but the system that keeps them rich and you poor. And it’s EMBARRASSING that you’re falling for that shit and turning on other working folks like some kind of rat in an experiment. It’s not the other rats, it’s the fucking lab dude!

Big Bro, I think you might want to reconsider the “Indie” label. Your own bias is crystal clear when you interpret that my opinion is just pathetic “white pride bullshit” and you qualify your reprimand of Martin with “As much as I agree with what you’re saying…..”

So while I respect some of the things you have to say, and I’m certainly not here to antagonize, I’m not a sycophant either. It doesn’t really reflect well on you to call me pathetic and lame just because I lack the white guilt required to be in your inner circle.

Call me a neo Nazi (I’m guessing that’s what you mean by “white pride bullshit”) all day long, I’m not apologizing for who I am.

And, Martin, I want to take back the ‘loser’ comment. I didn’t take the “Texans hanging tough” the wrong way, I knew how you meant it. You’re right, let’s move on.

Big Bro, I hate the fucking system as much as you do. I’m not poor so I’m not looking for a scapegoat for my misery, AND yes the rich establishment elite is to blame for a lot of things. Just like the MEXICAN GOVERNMENT ELITE is responsible for a lot of the problems in Mexico, and Hugo Chavez is responsible for fucking up his beautiful country. It’s not a white thing, it’s a corrupt establishment issue.

Hmmm. On another thread, we have Brian stating:

As much as I disagree with and am even upset by hardline conservatives, it doesn’t cross my mind to underestimate or insult them with terms like deranged or retarded. I don’t see how that contributes to anything, and I want to contribute, not undermine.

    So which is it?

wow. i just want to say, mostly to Brian since he runs this blog, that I find the reading interesting for the first few comments. Prior to, it sounds like the show, where people have conversations about differing opinions. After the first few, for me, it becomes quite far from the idea the show embodies. It seems to me that most in here are trying to either convince, or defend. These feel like arguements, not conversations to me. And why does it seem that many whites from Texas consider themselves minorities and victims? Brian, thoughts?

No evidence, Todd? The “Expelled Exposed” website you linked to provides incredible amounts of evidence, and while it’s true that “Sexpelled” doesn’t do that, it’s just a piece of satire, so what are you so uptight about? “Expelled” plays it pretty loose in terms of providing evidence, & it’s meant to be a serious indictment of science’s alleged “persecution” of ID supporters. The NCSE website explains very thoroughly the errors in the Stein film and shows, for example, that the Sternberg incident you mentioned is grossly misrepresented in the film, citing the facts behind the distortions. Did you read all that? Did you do your own research to make sure the NCSE facts are accurate? (They are.) And it wasn’t just the incident about the paper by Meyer which he published (& which was not properly peer reviewed, as you indicated) but a number of incidents over a span of time that brought about Sternberg’s “downfall.” But why am I bothering when you seem to have made up your mind already? I’m not opposed to ID being explored in schools as another way of looking at things–I also think it’s OK for students to be taught about the world’s various religions, as long as the teacher doesn’t become a preacher–but to present ID as scientific in the same way Darwinian evolution is scientific is ludicrous. There are many scientists who don’t find science & religion incompatible, by the way, but those scientists are not supporters of ID as scientific.

  41. April 18th, 2008 | 5:59 pm

    Unca,

Yeah, I’ve done my own research. I follow this particular issue fairly closely. Did you do your own research on the NCSE facts? Did you seek out any pro-ID answers to the NCSE claims?

The Meyer paper was properly peer reviewed, by the way:

As the controversy heated up in the ensuing months and the allegations about Dr. Sternberg’s mishandling of the Meyer article remained unresolved, the BSW never issued a definitive statement about whether or not the peer-review allegations were true. Only in late January 2005, when Dr. Sues asked Dr. McDiarmid via email about whether the BSW was “satisfied that a proper review by specialists was undertaken,”66 was there any recognition that the article was properly peer-reviewed. Dr. McDiarmid replied to Dr. Sues: “I have seen the review file and comments from 3 reviewers on the Meyer paper. All three with some differences among the comments recommended or suggested publication. I was surprised but concluded that there was not inappropriate behavior vs a vis [sic] the review process.” (From: Intolerance and the Politicization of Science at the Smithsonian page 24)

I would, again, suggest to everyone that it is very dangerous to dignify what I like to describe as “crazy bullshit” with serious, thoughtful engagement. How much time would you, for example, attempt to convince a Holocaust denier that she is wrong and that it did, in fact, take place?

Okay, this will be my last post in awhile. I have read how I have seemingly gotten lopped into the same group with Todd because of my “horrible beliefs”.

When it comes to the national healthcare system, I have major reservations. To understand further, please read.

The average new Ford car on every lot has more than $2000 built into the price that goes to the health care of current and past employees.

What upsets me the greatest is that no one has yet to discuss how we would be able to lower the costs of items once companies didn’t have to shoulder this burden.

In Ford’s case, you will have the right saying that the Unions will clamor for more “deserved” benefits while the left says that prices will remain the same because of all those evil rich republicans demanding to make a larger profit so they can pay for the health care system.

Why hasnt anyone come out to talk about the absolute potential of lowering costs of goods so that the poor can afford it? Clearly, either if you tax the rich more (and by “rich” I mean anyone who makes $50k or more) or produce the funds to pay for this system through consumption (Canada’s GST/PST), it will be the middle and upper class who will pay a large burden.

So, the $2000 that was in the sales price to cover health will then have to go cover wages that these working people demand so that they can pay their “share”…. and possibly more!?

I am not here to debate who will get care or not. Personally, I know that I am fucked either way.

    So, until we meet again….

Keep your head up John from Cleveland. I’ve noticed people pile on you a lot, but don’t let it make you doubt yourself. There’s nothing wrong with your posts, and it’s clear you’re just a guy trying to make an honest living like everybody else. It doesn’t take much bravery for others to post politically correct shit to gain approval from the mob…. errrr, community, and then gang up on you for breaking the orthodoxy. This fucking blog is about as independent as Air America. But, I must admit, for some reason I like the atomosphere here.

  45. April 19th, 2008 | 2:13 am

Just to keep the record clear, despite what Todd seems to be insinuating with his quote of me from the previous thread, I didn’t call Shane or anyone else names here. One can attack ideas or views without attacking those holding them. Todd doesn’t get the difference, but that’s just one of many things Todd doesn’t want to get.

The white-pride rhetoric is alive and well in Shane’s actual writing. Shane, if you don’t know why I accused you of such rhetoric, go re-read what you actually wrote before. I’m sick of re-quoting people’s disgusting language back to them.

As for the “indie” label, Shane, I don’t have a clue what you mean. Maybe I’m dense, but last I checked I’m not an adherent or admirer of any political party. “Indie” doesn’t mean “unopinionated.” It doesn’t mean you never take sides, and it doesn’t mean I can’t disagree with you and agree with Martin. Not only do I disagree with WHAT you have to say on this subject, I also disagree with HOW you said it. With Martin, I’m basically just in disagreement with HOW he said it. If you think it’s un-independent to state that, then YOU are the one who doesn’t belong here, my friend.

I’m glad you agree that the elites and the system are a problem. I only wish you would stop doing their bidding and turn your racial antagonism into solidarity. Even if people of color get slight advantages over white people (which, on the whole, I think is a laughable stance), it’s nothing compared to the advantages claimed by the wealthy in this country. In fact, if Mexican immigrants come streaming across the border by the millions tomorrow, they wouldn’t in their wildest dreams be able to take from the white working man and woman what the top 1% of Americans take. No matter how bad you (mistakenly) think minorities are in the unfair-advantages category, they don’t hold a candle to the wealthy elites. If you want better pay, more opportunities, etc, stop trying to bleed the stone that is your fellow worker — look to the lazy motherfuckers who are holding your shorties by the fistful.

After reading John from Cleveland’s statement that he doesn’t want to post here anymore, I have to say I’m starting to think this whole experiment is just a disaster. I think people on all sides of the issue have used typical, textbook Internet misbehavior to send this blog right down the tubes. It’s become a boys’ club where viciousness rules the day. I personally have no interest in hosting a forum where sensible, polite conservatives get personally attacked, any more than I want to host a forum where tried-and-true reactionaries have free reign to hijack every thread that comes along, or where name-calling is a standard mode of conversation. It’s just stupid and not worth my time.

Naively, I thought this would be an opportunity for people who have gotten past the typical Left-Right bullshit could have sensible discussions. But since we’re dragged down to to brainless, elementary-level, lowest-common-denominator debates any time a new idea is raised, there’s really no hope of getting very far on any issue. So long as anyone is willing to cast issues aside and go on personal tirades, we are paralyzed. Which, in at least one person’s case, was almost certainly the goal. So hat’s off to you. You know who you are.

I’m going to discuss some options with Pete and see what’s next for the blog, but as things stand I’m pretty sure I’m going to either turn off comments and just blog stuff from the show from time to time, or simply shut the blog down altogether. It’s a shame that, after just a few weeks, a handful of people have been able to so thoroughly ruin this forum, at least for me. The last thing I want is to detract from the show, since complementing and enhancing the show was really the whole point from the beginning.

My whole point wasn’t to “attack the other rats in the experiment” I was merely trying to open people’s eyes to the world around them and sometimes the only way to do that is “shock and awe”. “GRAB THEIR HEAD AND FORCE THEM TO LISTEN FOR A MINUTE”. My ultimate goal was to try and bring change and get people behind a cause. I agree with what you’re saying (Brian/Big Brother..) If there can be groups like NAACP AND LULAC why cant the MIDDLE-CLASS WHITES come together and form our own group.. WHAT’S REALLY STOPPING US?…. THE SYSTEM “THE MAN”..

    Hey Big Bro,

When I first looked at this blog’s comments recently, just like you I was disappointed at some of the content. There was somone scanning the content for someone to ridicule. One other person seems to be singled out in multiple threads for his views. That is the classic bad internet behavior I think you are referrring to - forming vicious clicks to squelch anything that doesn’t reinforce the validity of their mob opinion. I guess it made me think the same thing you seeem to be afraid is happening now. That this is just another typical internet blog for an immature political boys’ club.

However after exchanging a couple of posts with you and some others, I don’t think this is a typical blog forum. I can see your points and under the surface of our own unique styles, we share many of the same views. My first two posts weren’t good. I was reacting to something that pissed me off and I think I let emotion get involved too much. That’s not to say there aren’t some things we disagree on, there certainly are a few.

I don’t want to see anything associated with Pete’s show turn into another political smear site, but I’d hate to see it completely go away too. Don’t pull the plug just yet….

Yo Jason, I think any further discussion on this particular topic is like forcing it down everyone’s throats. I totally get what you’re saying and I think everyone else does too. It’s unfortunate the way some people interpret it, but the all-caps does come across as somewhat militant. Please understand I am not lecturing you (I have actually tried to defend your point of view in this thread). I do think Big Bro is right when he says the intensity needs to be kicked down a notch so this doesn’t become one of those infamous political gutter sites (I am hesitant to name them because I don’t want a reaction).

Martin from Virginia, of course I know how to pronounce Roehl, I drive their truck! Secondly, Roahl is only 1500 or so trucks, uncomparible to JB Hunt or Schnieder, who by the way charge in exccess of $3,500.00 for there school which they use simulaters rather then closed courses and open roads. After I drop 120,000 miles I don’t pay squat, in fact I havn’t paid anything yet, which is only $2,400.00 for 3 weeks training at their facility in Marshfield, WI with a trainer who carries 26 years experience, minus training. And I spent 20 days over the road training with over the road trainers. One problem with trucking this country faces is poor training, Swifts school was recently busted for selling CDLs, not Swift in gerneral as they have cooperated, but their school, not sure the difference. About my pay, no its not much, but I never walked into any past job and was paid the same as someone with experience in that field, if I stay in trucking, not likely, but if I keep it as a career, I will go find that independant “mom and pop” outfit that will get me $.40 per mile or percentage. Also your refernce to intellegence on scolarships is low. I didn’t qualify for any scolarships (my own fault) or loans due to my parents income, lets keep in mind my parents were going through a divorce at the time and they weren’t paying my way anyways, I was raised independently, so to ask them for money neither had would be down right selfish of me in my opinion.

Pete in Iowa, the Purdue Chicken issie, not sure which plants, but it was actually Purdue itself that turned over these 300 plus illegals. The problem is, manufacturing amongst other trades are hiring out a hiring agency to prescreen and select workers for most jobs now. Heres what this does, it keeps the manufactuers and other blindfolded on whos coming thorugh the doors and it was speculated that Purdue only fired these workers and turned them over to simply cut jobs due to a lacking economy.

Pete f. IA also makes a good point about dock workers. When I make a phone call often I get, press one for English
