Monday Open Thread

Okay, here we go again. And, sadly, I once again have to request commenters remain civil and respectful. I also wonder how much better this blog might be if frequent/avid commenters held back a little and let others chime in without having to first sift through 50+ comments.

Today’s show discussed how we treat each other, the so-called “War on Terror” and the Iraq War.

This would also be a great place to bring up new topics you might want to hear discussed on an upcoming show.

Your 5 year old is still on the teet?

    I kid, I kid :P

Good show for the first 40 or so I caught while driving to work today. I’ve been listening quite often over the last two weeks, and it’s slowly becoming my favorite program to listen to on Sirius, usually taking air time away from NPR’s “Talk of the Nation” even. Good stuff Pete and crew! I’ll call in one of these days.

If I had heard the rest of the discussion, I’d love to get into, but alas, I didn’t :(

    Podcast? Hmm, maybe?

Also, perhaps a bit of time on the next show should be dedicated to possible ramifications of the recently announced thumbs up of the XM-Sirius merger by the Justice Department. I don’t want to lose Indie Talk, but I could really do without Area 33 in favor of XM’s The Move :D Sirius has, by far, the best talk, but the music selection is horrible :(

I agree, one these days lets talk about a possible merger and what the negatives and positives would be of such a merger. Damn, I wanted to put a smilie in here but Will A. used them all! J/K! Good topic Will A.

You just like him because you guys have the same name.

Seriously though, you’re talking 34 and 35, right? Boombox and Chill? Not a Boombox fan personally, too many low quality mash-ups that sound like they were ripped from Limewire. Chill though, good shite. If you can’t tell, I’m a bit of an electronic music nut.

I for one will be keen to be able to listen to Big Kev’s Geek Stuff on XM. What can I say, I’m a huge geek and lack of geek talk on Sirius has me bummed.

Don’t you see what happens when I stay away from the posting for about 12 hours? Since Big Bro asked, I did just that. Sadly the result is that nothing happens. People discuss the soon-to-be merger between the only two satellite radio companies. Yawn. You need me to help make sure good conversations happen (kidding).

SO HELP ME GOD. IF PETE LOSES HIS ROLE AFTER THE MERGER IS COMPELTE, I AM CANCELLING MY 3 YEAR OLD SUBSCRIPTION.

RE: Topic for a future show - IRONY and SPEECH

The irony of the freedom of speech that PBM enjoys and promotes on Sirius vs. the attempts at controlling speech and the freedom of conversation here.

Let the blog reflect the independence and free speech of the show - although separate they’re not equal.

    Will,

Yeah, Boombox and Chill. You are right about some of the mashups - also now that I’ve listened regularly, I hear too much of the rotation and some of the stuff in it sucks bad.

Liquid Todd’s afternoon show usually has a good mix, so I will tune into that, but I skip between the comedy channels, Indie Talk and music - 34, 35 and The Vault.

Sirius Right and Left newstalk are almost unlistenable.

I don’t see anyone clamping down on speech ant.

Asking people to be civil is not forbidding speech and is only meant (I think) to keep this place from descending into flame wars.

  15. March 25th, 2008 | 9:36 am

When Pete sent out the newsletter e-mail announcing his new show on IndieTalk i replied back to him with my own e-mail congratulating him on his new show.
Also in that email was (something to the effect of…) Commiserations on the time slot he had been given. “I doubt i’ll be turning off Andrew Wilkow and Sean Hannity to listen to your show, i hope i can catch the replay every day”

How wrong was I? I now turn off the last hour of Wilkow and the first 2 hours of Hannity to listen to PBM.

Keep up the good work, Pete.

    Suggestion for future show:
    Tax reform (specifically the FairTax)

The FairTax Book (Neal Boortz, John Lindor)
FairTax: The Truth: Answering the Critics (Boortz, Lindor, Rob Woodall)
     FairTax.org

It would solve our economic troubles. Disband the IRS, Repeal the 16th Admendment. Check it out.

ps, but telling people to limit their posts is - especially when the result was like 8 or 9 posts until a few decided to ignore the request; thoughts don’t always appear in the form of web links and dissertations; sometimes they happen in the moment and although keeping one’s mouth shut is good advice in many circumstances, I see no point in doing so here

RE: Show topics - FINANCIAL LITERACY

Financial literacy. Yes, a potentially dry and boring topic. But I think PBM could bring new light and a funny angle.

Saving our economy will require more than tax reform - we need to address the issue of the average American’s “financial literacy”  http://www.360financialliteracy.org/)

    Ant,

That is one reason why we must draw outside the lines. Pete needs to get a forum. And we should all endeavor to carry on this conversation with the so-called “Information Age” in mind. As in, get a freakin’ webcam and lets do some face to face discussion!

I’m going to try to do a Youtube video with my new webcam tonight and post it on the youtube group I created during yesterday’s show: http://www.youtube.com/groups/petesbigmouth (Pete, if you’d like, I can delete the group and let you create it so you are the owner of the group - now is the best time since I’m the only member!)

    John,

Are you familiar with the various tax protester movements? I’ve discovered one which is different from all the rest…it affirms the constitutionality of the income tax and regards the 16th amendment as legitimate. Indeed, it urges people to follow the law completely. The IRS is after the author of the book which promotes this idea, it is currently being litigated, but I’ve researched the statutes and case law and have found little in his central thesis which is contradicted.

The book is Cracking the Code. The author is Peter Hendrickson.

Ant, I’m going to hope and have faith that you are just not bright enough to comprehend simple sentences in English. The alternative is that you are a dickhead, and that you are intentionally distorting what I have said here just to be a douche. So I’ll assume you are not just a prick, and that instead you are just not a very good reader or thinker (evidenced by many of your other posts here).

Let’s review. I wrote: “I also wonder how much better this blog might be if frequent/avid commenters held back a little and let others chime in without having to first sift through 50+ comments.”

Which you interpreted as a violation of your “free speech.”

First, an English lesson for you. When someone wonders how much better the comments might be if you shut your fucking trap for a little while, that is not the same as demanding that you do so, which would still not be the same as preventing you from talking. So what I wrote was a far cry from a violation of your free speech, assuming you have a right to free speech on our blog on my server.

Now a little civics lesson for you. If I set up a forum for discussion, I don’t have to let you say shit. If you are uncivil or disrespectful, you lose your “right” to post here, which is by the way not guaranteed by the Constitution or any law. You will always have the right to set up your own blog and go post there. Of course, I realize, no one would read it, and here you have a highly trafficked forum on which to post your ridiculous comments. But still, it’s the government’s job not to censor you. You have no such expectation here, even though I have never deleted or edited anyone’s post (except spammers) and hope I never have to.

The funniest thing to me is when you suggested that Pete’s call-in talk show was a more open forum than this blog. Have I ever cut you or any poster off mid-sentence? Have you ever had trouble getting through? Have I ever said I need to move on to the next poster? Have I ever said you can only post inside a 3-hour period? This blog is, in fact, inherently more open than any call-in talk show ever could be. Which, again, makes me think you must really not have a strong capacity for reason, because the alternative would be to suggest you are just a douche-guzzling dingleberry-riddled asshole, which I don’t want to believe. I’d rather assume it’s not your fault.

I am going to switch the subject completely tonight and I hope that some of you will willingly participate.

I want to further the discussion about the degradation of our once ethical society.

I came to this revelation earlier when I was watching John Adams. Everyone was perfectly respectful of each other and always called each other Mr. XXXX.

When I was a child, I always called my teacher Ms./Mrs. Johnson and NEVER Miss Kristy or whatever his/her first name was. I see kids calling their adult neighbors by their first names.

Personally, I feel that we have lost the ability to revere our peers as well as those who preceeded us. We constantly are treating people at ours or a level below us. We never look up to people like we once did. Instead, we are finding ways to show that we are either at their level or are above them in some way.

We need to get back to our old ways.

OMG I am tired of seeing the same people or insects dominate this blog talking crap!

Podcasts?! Real fans have Stillettos and record the shows when they can not hear them live. They are also replayed at night and all darn weekend and when Pete is off doing stand up which seems to be most Fridays because Friday I always have to hear Thursdays show.

I am concerned about the merger especially since last xmas we bought lift time plans! I am hopeful since I agree the music selection sucks!

    Pete,
Last Thursday you started telling a story about how your pot smoking teacher friend set you straight but you never bothered to complete the story cause you got off on your mission rant. Can you please finish the story? I listened to the show twice, looking for an ending I thought I missed but never even happened! I have been wondering about the ending for almost a week now!

Good show but would love to see you pick a topic and stay on task more.
