Tim Wise on Institutionalized Racism and White Privilege

The email is already pouring in about anti-racist activist Tim Wise’s appearance on the show. He hung with Pete for the whole 3rd hour, so if you missed it, you can catch it again on the replays from 10-11pm and again 2-3am ET. It was fast paced, informative and hilarious.

You probably didn’t agree with everything Tim said, or maybe you just want to explore some of the ideas raised a bit more. So here’s your chance…

Bring It…

So I pissed a lot of people off today when I evidently advocated “class warfare” against the rich. Callers came out of the woodwork, essentially to defend the rich, and of course they got priority over people who would stand with Pete or me, since that’s the way my little bro runs his show (and it’s why you listen)…

Anyway, I’m not sorry for what I said. (Okay, I’m sorry for saying Grant is lazy and implied he is an avid beachgoer. He may work hard for his “in excess of $180,000″, and he may burn easily. I just got pissed when he said I shouldn’t get emotional about not having much to show at the end of the day for all the work I do.)

We know that people call into talk shows and say whatever they think helps their argument, with little regard for the truth. Pete was on the ball today and fired back pretty good, but the onslaught continued. I’m sick of hearing about how the poor are stealing from the rich. I do think we need a class war in this country, but raising taxes on the rich isn’t good enough. Those who work for a living are sick of paying rent to and getting paltry wages from the ownership class. We can’t save enough to save, let alone to invest. Too many Americans can’t keep up — never mind get ahead — but we’re forced to sit back and watch the government give away our tax money to the investor class so they can gamble with it.

So now’s your chance to go off on me.

What does C.H.A.N.G.E Stand For?

AJ the trucker from Georgia called in and said he overheard some bigots talking about Barack Obama on the CB radio. One said “CHANGE” stands for “Come Help A Nigger Get Elected.” Since PBMers aren’t disgusting trogledytes, listeners immediately started generating alternative acronyms. Some examples after the jump…

The Last Debate

Okay, so they’re over. Reactions?

What did you think of McCain’s attempt to steal Obama’s “Joe the Plumber” thunder? Do you think McCain could have explained how his economic plan would effect Joe the Plumber off the cuff? It turns out ol’ Joe thinks Barack Obama is a socialist, which just goes to show that Joe the Plumber is kind of dumb. Funny how the people most certain that Obama is not a socialist are actual socialists.

Mini Pete?

PBM listener Kevin sent us a link to this video that he and Pete claim is of a miniature version of Pete.

What do you think? Spitting image or a stretch.

Children Living and Learning

Pete read this poem by Dorothy Law Nolte on the air during the final minutes of the show. He also admonished parents who do not have a copy of it hanging on a wall in their house, which might’ve been a wee bit harsh. Anyway, on one hand, I agree with him that the poem is really… well… sweet. On the other hand, it seems kind of wrong in a few places, even to my bleeding heart.

If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.
If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive.
If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy.
If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy.
If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.
If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.
If children live with tolerance, they learn patience.
If children live with praise, they learn appreciation.
If children live with acceptance, they learn to love.
If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.
If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal.
If children live with sharing, they learn generosity.
If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness.
If children live with fairness, they learn justice.
If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect.
If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them.
If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.

So what do you think of this? Is it a good thing to teach kids that “the world is a nice place in which to live?” I mean, is that even true? Maybe we should be teaching them it’s their responsibility to make it such a place. I mean, the hostility line is definitely true, but do we really never want to criticize kids? Anyway, I suspect I agree with this poem a whole lot more than many PBM listeners. In fact, I’m a little surprised that Pete likes it so much, since he has talked several times on the air about how constant praise and approval by parents renders children weak. Or something like that. I figured this one would stir up some good debate, so let’s hear your reviews.

The Method to His Evasiveness

Recently, in the comments under my posting of the Sarah Palin debate flowchart, I called on our readers to point me to some good anti-Obama graphics. Adam in Texas, who calls in to the show and posts comments here regularly, took the challenge to heart by actually creating one of his own. And I have to say, I think his Barack Obama Associations Flowchart pretty damn clever and very well-constructed. Judge for yourself…

There is one glaring factual inaccuracy, which is the suggestion that Bill Ayers tried to murder people with his bombs, or that he has stated he wishes he had committed murders. That’s quite far from reality, as Adam well knows, but I guess in this age of propaganda, it’s what we wish our adversaries said or thought or did that matters, not so much the truth.

Anyway, I still thought that was a damn good graphic. If anybody else has treats to share, send them to me at myfirstname @petesbigmouth.com (my first name is Brian).

We Knew This Was Coming…

For those of us who knew the Wall Street bailout package rushed through Congress last week was going to be a huge, unilateral gift to the same wealthy scumbags who screwed up in the first place, proof of our suspicion is already emerging. This is what happens when you don’t stop and ask questions about just how $700 billion will be managed. And you don’t stop and ask questions, of course, if you are foaming at the mouth with excitement about handing your rich backers a huge gob of taxpayer money to play with.

From the London Telegraph:

But the US Treasury does not have the staff to make the decisions about which banks and which debts to buy up and will instead spend the next few weeks hiring Wall Street experts to do the buying for them.

Experts warned the approach is laden with financial pitfalls, since it may be impossible to find independent contractors who do not have a vested interest in which debts to buy and the price at which they buy them.

The companies hired to identify and buy the bad debts will have to make decisions that affect the same firms whose shares they own. In some cases they might effectively be buying up their own bad debts.

This is quite possibly biggest domestic crime in US history, and they’re doing it right in front of our noses. The corporate media and the politicians don’t give a shit what we think. They’re not afraid of us, because they know their “democratic” system insulates them from our wrath while offering us the illusion of control.

Now our leaders have eagerly doubled down on our behalf, placing one more bad bet — this time with public money — on the very same dirtballs that got us into this conundrum.

If you aren’t outraged, you definitely aren’t paying attention. (Or maybe you’re a dick.)
