Best American Actor

I got schooled on the rules: actor does not include women, and of course Pete will someday do a show on who’s your favorite actress (yeah, right). Anyway, I said Forest Whitaker and George Clooney, though Clooney was just my safety pick because I knew Pete would only allow actors he personally would blow. Pete likes Johnny Depp.

So what do you think?

The Alleged Tuft

In case you were straining to imagine the so-called “tuft” that Aaron is sporting — or if you’ve just been wondering since this post about his former ugliness just how handsome he is — we’ve got an exclusive for you.

Is It a Race/Sex Race?

On today’s show we heard pretty much every opinion on the race factor in yesterday’s Pennsylvania Democratic primary. At least I think we did.

I find it really strange that everyone seems to take for granted that black people are voting for Obama. We know that they are, but don’t you remember when the media was all but taunting Obama because he was only attracting about one-fifth or less of  the black vote? It wasn’t until February that blacks actively started favoring Obama.

I think white and black people deserve more respect for their choices of nominee than we generally give them, at least as far as this Democratic race goes. I do think that the merits of the candidates are the main factor — the only problem is both candidates completely lack merit. So maybe, given that, the only real factors are race and sex. Who knows. Does this view make me “retarded”?

One More Try

So I’ve spent the last few days thinking about this blog and how it can best be put to use. Keeping in mind that it is really just meant to complement and enhance Pete’s talk show, my biggest fear is that it will detract. We all have to remember that anything any of us posts here appears under a big picture of my little brother’s unsightly mug. And my loyalty to him is going to trump all other factors in determining where we take this little experiment.

After talking with Pete, reading all the recent comments about the future of the blog, and emailing with several of you, I’ve come to conclude that the blog deserves one more chance. If I am able to put in the kind of time I would like to, then I’ll be handling the blog more like I was a few weeks ago: posting links mentioned on the show, calling for more comments on particular topics, etc. I’ll also be posting more original topics, like traditional blog-style comments on items in the news, maybe my own analysis of some topics discussed on the show, etc. I’ll also try to get some more behind-the-scenes stuff up, since I think most readers/listeners appreciate that. (I scanned a bunch of pics of young P-Jimmy, so stay tuned.)

I have also posted some new “decorum” rules for the comments. Nothing that isn’t common sense, and nothing that hasn’t already been said. But now it’s all in one place, and no one can deny it.

Finally, I’ve added several new features to the comments section. You will have to register and be logged in to the site to post comments, now. I realize that’s a slight pain, but it is necessary to weed out the colossal amounts of spam we’re receiving, and it will allow us to ban users who are repeatedly abusive of this forum we provide. Second, I have converted the comments to a “threaded” structure. You are encouraged to reply to particular comments, when appropriate, and thus future readers can more-easily seek or avoid particular threads of conversation.

I’m going to miss the first part of today’s show because I have a doctor’s appointment, but when I get back I’ll get right into it and hopefully we’ll start having some real fun here. (Note the new quote at the top of every page! Let it serve as a reminder to us all…)

Update: Tip: When you register yourself as a user of this blog, go into your profile and give yourself a nickname and then select that to be your display name. This way you can have a different username to log in with and a display name that is like Jill from Hill.

Thursday in Philly

Okay, so it’s not quite Thursday yet, but I’m exhausted and need to get some sleep if I want to keep up with Pete on the air tomorrow. Another busy show is planned. We’re having a blast here in Philly. I got to see Pete’s warm-up at Colbert and then watch the taping. If you missed Wednesday’s episode of The Colbert Report, you definitely want to catch the last segment on a replay. Pete and I both promise you it will be worth it. Tears were streaming out of my eyes I was laughing so hard.

So today we covered cheesesteaks, gay rights, Latino issues, and other random stuff. Sean (the producer who’s on scene with us keeping shit running) has taken a bunch of pictures. I’ll try to get some up today before or during the show.

Update: Photos from Wednesday’s show!

Tuesday Open Thread

I’m swamped today because I’m planning to spend Wednesday and Thursday in Philly with Pete. So I’m just gonna set y’all loose on each other again. Play nice.

Life and (After) Death

Pete is getting personal on the air today. It’s not really weird for me, as his brother, to hear him open up like that. He’s always been, as he says, “an open book.” And any of his family members can attest that book has often been more open than we’d prefer. But I’ve rarely heard a radio or other media personality who is that way, in an honest fashion, over the airwaives (or satellite waves, as it were).

So in addition to wondering about your thoughts on life, death and afterlife, I’m wondering if listeners appreciate the approach Pete takes to certain topics (like life and death and legacy today, or therapy last week, etc.).

Personally, I don’t spend much time thinking about these topics — certainly not death and afterlife. I don’t figure there’s any way to know what happens when we die, so I’ve never really thought it was worth caring. I suppose that’s because my view of life is that the more time you spend pondering moot subjects, the less time you spend living. So I don’t know if there is a god or if there is an afterlife, and I don’t really care. But I do appreciate people who spend time talking about how we make life more fulfilling, more relevant and more valuable, the way Pete’s terminally ill friend Hank seems to have, and the way Pete is trying to. That’s one of the ways I look up to my little bro.

Midweek Open Thread

Time for some more chit-chat. Again, sorry I haven’t been posting anything interesting. I do hope that changes soon. I was able to catch the whole show today, live, and thought it was pretty good. The Jesse Ventura thing was very interesting, though I agree with John from Cleveland (I think it was him) — those segments were a little ass-kissy. But the thing you’ve got to keep in mind about Pete is he’s not fake about any of this shit. What you hear on the radio is how he really feels about someone or some issue. He didn’t pretend to be Ventura’s equal or superior the way some hosts would.

There I’ve gone and babbled. Like I’m the one with the notoriously big mouth…

Monday Open Thread

I’m too busy with other work to engage right now (proofreading a book about an idiot), but I don’t want to keep you guys from gabbing, so here’s a new open thread for you. (I feel like I’m tossing meat into the lion cage).

Thursday Open Thread

I took the day off from the show and the site today, but here’s an open thread for you guys to gnaw on for a while. Tell me what I missed today… Enjoy!
